Workshop Overview

Teachers will experience the Student Engagement by Design framework from the learner's perspective while exploring practical ways to launch learning studios, strengthen small-group instruction, and create classroom systems that increase independence and ownership.

The day is designed for a new implementation year, so the emphasis will remain on building confidence, understanding the core structures, and leaving with a realistic first step for classroom use.

A collaborative activity that connects current classroom practices with opportunities to increase student engagement and ownership.

9:30 – 10:00 The Power of Small-Group Instruction ⌄

Explore how purposeful small-group instruction supports differentiation, intervention, enrichment, stronger relationships, and increased student achievement.

10:00 – 10:30 From Traditional Instruction to Learning Studios ⌄

Through an interactive activity, teachers will explore how learning studios create the time and structure needed for meaningful small-group instruction while promoting student independence and ownership.

10:30 – 10:40 Break ⌄

Take a moment to recharge and connect with colleagues.

10:40 – 11:30 Experiencing a Learning Studio ⌄

Teachers will complete a learning studio using a checklist while experiencing the classroom from a student's perspective and reflecting on how structure, choice, and organization support learning.

11:30 – 12:00 Building Student Ownership ⌄

Discover how classroom systems, checklists, routines, and clear expectations empower students to work independently while providing teachers with more time for purposeful small-group instruction.

12:00 – 1:30 Lunch & Team Collaboration ⌄

Time to relax, recharge, and continue informal conversations with colleagues.

1:30 – 2:10 The Power of Data-Driven Small Groups ⌄

Learn how formative assessments, classroom evidence, and district data can be used to create purposeful small groups that increase student achievement and personalize instruction.

2:10 – 2:50 Designing Effective Learning Studios ⌄

Explore how teacher-led small groups, independent practice, digital content, and collaborative learning experiences work together to create engaging, differentiated classrooms.

2:50 – 3:00 Break ⌄

Stretch, refresh, and prepare for the final planning block.

3:00 – 3:45 Teacher Planning Studio ⌄

Using a workshop checklist, teachers will work at their own pace, place, and path while designing an upcoming lesson. Marcia will meet with teams in small groups to answer questions, provide feedback, and support implementation.

3:45 – 4:00 Reflection, Questions & Next Steps ⌄

Participants will reflect on the day's learning, identify their first implementation steps, and leave with a clear plan for launching Student Engagement by Design in their classrooms.

Please bring a charged device and access to an upcoming lesson or pacing guide. Teachers will use both during the planning portion of the workshop.
