Four Systems of Student Ownership
Ownership does not happen by chance. It is designed through systems.
1. Learning Workflow
Students always know:
- What am I learning?
- Where do I start?
- What's next?
- What do I do when I'm finished?
Try tomorrow: Make one part of the workflow visible before students ask.
2. Small Groups
Small groups become possible when everyone else knows exactly what to do.
- Which students need me today?
- Why do they need me?
- What evidence will I collect?
Try tomorrow: Protect 10 minutes for one intentional small group.
3. Student Decisions
Students build ownership by making meaningful learning decisions.
- How will I learn?
- Who will I learn with?
- How much support do I need?
- How will I show my learning?
Try tomorrow: Add one decision that changes the learning—not just the activity.
4. Visible Progress
Students should be able to see, explain, and act on evidence of their growth.
- Where am I?
- Where am I growing?
- What's my next goal?
- What evidence proves I'm improving?
Try tomorrow: Help students identify one piece of evidence and one next step.
